A treatment for peanut allergies  using peanuts themselves is within  reach after a “dramatically” succes sful trial. Nine out of ten allergi c children were gradually able to e at five peanuts a day in a study th at freed them of the fear of accide ntally eating nuts. NHS clinics cou ld start using the method within a  year, though experts told parents n ot to try the therapy at home, sayi ng that it must be done in speciali st centres. About one percent of ch ildren have peanut allergies, which  were unknown 20 years ago. Several  children die each year from anaphy lactic shock after eating peanuts a nd thousands more live in fear of s etting off an immune reaction. Rese archers in Cambridge looked at 99 c hildren aged 7 to 16, half of whom  were given a daily dose of peanut p rotein equivalent to a seventieth o f a peanut. This doubled every two  weeks until it reached 800mg, equiv alent to five nuts. Although some c hildren felt sick, 84 percent toler ated this dose. Half could cope wit h ten peanuts and when the control  group was later given the therapy,  91 percent were able to eat five pe anuts, researchers say in The Lance t.​
