What contribution did solon make on the road to democracy

Solon was one of the more deserving people for later establishment  Athenian democracy. He divided Athenians in four classes according to property status, from which then  rights (participation in government) and obligations arose (participation in  war). Wealth was measured by measures of grain, oil, or wine.

Explanation:

Solon was Athenian archon who decided to annulate all debts, and with state money he redeemed all those who were sold into slavery because of debts. He enabled rich members, primarily merchants and craftsmen, to participate in political decisions. He provided them the opportunity to participate in government according to the criterion of personal wealth and not according to origin.

To maintain some balance between rich and poor, a minimum of political  rights are also secured for the poorest Athenians. They could participate in the work of the ecclesia (National Assembly).
