The alkaline battery gets its name because it has an alkaline electrolyte of potassium hydroxide instead of the acidic ammonium chloride or zinc chloride electrolyte of the zinc-carbon batteries. An electrolyte is a substance that produces an electrically conducting solution when dissolved in a polar solvent, such as water. The dissolved electrolyte separates into cations and anions, which disperse uniformly through the solvent. Electrically, such a solution is neutral.Advantages. One of the advantages of alkaline batteries over other primary batteries and rechargeable batteries is that it has higher energy density. It has longer shelf life than batteries with chloride-type electrolyte. It could last to up to seven years unused, losing about five percent of its energy every year.
