How did the actions of northern states differ from actions of southern states regarding slavery after the american revolution?

The north wanted to keep slavery because they could produce more and not have to pay for labor. the south wanted to stop slavery but keep prices of southern goods the same which led to disagreements between the two. the Souths economy relied on the slaves working for free.
