During its phase of heightening power and consolidatory position, it ended up controlling most of the parts of Central Mexico. The valley of Mexico was taken over by the three states of Tenochtitlan, Texcoco and Tlacopan from 1428. This rule continued unperturbed until the conquest that was followed by the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadors who slaughtered them and put an end to the Aztec empire.  

Scholars have described the Aztec rule as Hegemonic or indirect. The rulers of conquered cities were left in power as long as they agreed to pay annual tribute to nobody but the Alliance. In addition, they also had to ensure continued supply of military forces. In return, political stability and protection were provided by the imperial power. People in these areas were also allowed to practice their own religion(polytheistic) but the only condition was that they had to include their God Huitzilopochtli as well.
