Bartolomeu Dias was a Portuguese explorer who headed an expedition of sailing towards Africa, around its southernmost tip. He was ordered by King John II of Portugal in order to find a route for trading in India. He started sailing in 1487 until he reached Kwaaihoek in 1488. Upon his return, he was able to discover "The Cape of Good Hope," which later on became a major trade route which opened towards the east. It allowed the Europeans to have an easy access of trading with India.
