King Phillip II of Spain was the most powerful monarch of Europe. He was angry over the constant piracy acts by British sailors against Spanish vessels carrying gold from the New World to Europe, and because of queen Elizabeth I´s support for Protestant forces in Europeans wars involving Spain. Phillip was an ardent Catholic and a supporter of the papacy.

In 1588, he sent the largest invading fleet to attack  England ever assembled, but the British navy managed to keep the Spanish ships off the coasts and then terrible weather in the English Channel dispersed the Spanish fleet , and it also caused the shipwreck of most of the fleet.  The Invincible Armada turned into a bloody and tragic fiasco.
