Because the earth's axis is tilted, one hemisphere is closer to the sun than the other in certain times of the year. In the Northern Hemisphere, we have summer in June-August because that's when our hemisphere is closer to the sun. In the Southern Hemisphere, summer is in December-March because that's when they are closer to the sun.
