This is called a longshore current. A longshore current is an ocean current and is caused by large swells that sweep into the shoreline and then push water down the beach. They do not have a fixed size or strength. They are helpful to the swimmers that are in danger because they sweep them down the beach and also play a leading role in shaping of shorelines.
