Activity 4D: Examining the Structure of the Text - Compare and Contrast Paragraph Scramble
This activity has been adapted from the California Reading and Literature Project. The
sentences that follow are from a paragraph comparing and contrasting emigration and
immigration. The order of these sentences has been scrambled. Working with a partner or small
group, arrange these sentences in an order that makes sense as a complete paragraph. Use
your knowledge of signal words to unscramble the paragraph.
1. Thus, we can say a person emigrates from a place and immigrates into a place.
2. Many people confuse the terms emigration and immigration.
3. This word starts with the prefix e-, which means "out" or "away from."
4. Both the term emigration and the term immigration describe aspects of transnational
migration or movement from one country to another.
5. Emigration describes the act of leaving one's homeland.
6. Ultimately, the important idea to remember is that both emigration and immigration are acts
of migration but they differ in their direction and point of view.
7. This word starts with the prefix im-, which means “into," "in," or "towards."
8. While these terms are related and share important similarities, there are also important
differences between these terms.
9. The word immigration, on the other hand, describes the act of entering a new country.
