First of all, I chose this profession because singing is my passion; I have sung since I was little. The equipment needed depends on what type of singing you are doing. To sing opera, the singer needs, depending on the song, a piano and an accompanist, along with (if needed) a microphone. Working hours tend to be irregular because of the difficulty of finding jobs. It tends to be a very stressful job, behind the scenes and performing. The pay depends on where you get the job at, whether it is an opera house or a restaurant. But, sadly, women artists, who work full-year, full-time, earn $0.75 for every dollar made by men artists. There are possibly no fringe benefits, depending on which company you sign with, if any. Some lifestyle implications are: having irregular schedules, less sleep than usual, protecting the throat year-round, and drinking more fluids than usual. There are no prospects for advancement, though becoming famous can be a plus. Nevertheless, the future job outlook is dim unless you have a monstrous talent for singing. If so, then you are set, but if not, another job would help, because of the irregular pay.
I would have to be able to stand for long periods of time, speak clearly so listeners can understand, understand the speech of another person, focus on one source of sound and ignore others, hear sounds and recognize the difference between them. Plus, singers also have to be personable, or else people do not have interest in them. No postsecondary education is necessary, but study in music theory, dance, and acting could be helpful to proceed in this career. Most singers have professional voice training when they are younger.
Finally, some advantages of this career are: becoming famous, earning a lot of money, not working in a cubicle, and relieving stress and anxiety while doing the thing I love. A major disadvantage is being vulnerable to exploitation or illegal discrimination based on the career, and having irregular pay and hours.
