It was a snow-packed and traffic-jammed Saturday when my Mom and I drove down to Whispering Pines Nursing Home. Since I was still young, I did not quite understand where we were going but I thought it was an adventure. As we walked through the wide, automatic doors there was an over-whelming gush of warmth and a stench of orange juice and moth balls. There was a shriveled old man wearing a feather in his hat sleeping in the big chair by the front door. My Mom went to check in with a woman who looked like the older version of Little Orphan Annie. After we made our way down a long hallway with bright ceiling lights, I curiously peeked into a few rooms and noticed each individual in every room had Wheel of Fortune on the little television sets and each person was propped up in a bed with white-sheets, staring ahead and utterly alone. Read the passage. when mother’s fever persisted for a week, father summoned our family doctor. dr. blakemore applied leeches to mother’s skin in hopes of reducing the amount of blood in her body. despite the doctor’s efforts, she languished in bed for three more days before her appetite returned and she requested a thin broth. our dear cook, mrs. davis, prepared the broth and delivered it to my mother directly, eager to ease her discomfort. what can readers infer about the time period of the passage?
