In "i am offering this poem," the simile "or like a pair of thick socks / the cold cannot bite through" reinforces the theme that a love poem is one of the most valuable gifts one can give by showing that the speaker will buy clothes for his beloved. how important it is to provide gifts to loved ones. that the poem can offer warmth and protection. that the speaker's beloved requires extra care.

the sentence does not violate the phrase structure second rule (introduced by noam chomsky) because noun phrases consist of a determiner such as a, the or every, and a noun. in the sentence, the noun phrase the cake includes a determiner (the) and a noun (cake).

on the other hand, the first rule indicates that a sentence encloses a noun phrase, followed by a verb phrase. the example sentence can be analysed as follows:

when new information proves that a reader's prediction is wrong, the reader should

the narrator is a first person, participant one, who describes in the simple past tense important and difficult events in his earlier life. he also provides temporal markers as the month (january) and the time (12: 30 pm). finally the account of his experience is very detailed, to the extent that a participant narrator would talk the same way about his experiences. a good example of such detail is the mention of the “bovril ration” which historically was a native american food adopted by european explorers in arctic and antarctic regions due to its high level of calories.
