The most commonly used matrix is agarose which is a natural polymer extracted from sea weeds. The DNA fragment separate according to their size through the sieving action of agarose gel. Smaller fragments moves fast compared to the larger fragments. Once the DNA fragments are separated they are observed under the UV light by staining them with ethidium bromide.
