Resources are the features of the environment availability of food, habitat etc which regulate growth, survival and reproduction in these organisms. As a result of this phenomena species undergo evolution. One species which develops more evolutionary traits will be favored to get the limiting resources and will be more competitive than the other. The weaker competitive species will reduce in population. Joseph Connell (1961) who was an ecologist studied factors which can influence the survival, reproduction and distribution of two barnacle species, Chthamalus stellatus and Balanus balanoids,  along the coast of Scotland. He observed that Balanus being more competitive excluded Chthamalus.
