Emphasis – this principle helps determine the center point of the piece, as well as determine the story of the art. It is usually what the observer first sees in the painting.Contrast – the principle that determines opposing elements and their relationship. It refers to the contrast of colors (dark and light, color and dark, etc.) and elements (big and small, oval and sharp, etc). These contrasts make the design more fun, interesting, and make some of the elements stand out.Balance – having balance in design means that all the parts of the design “weight” the same, that no place looks more crowded or over-saturated than the other. Balance can be symmetrical (that all sides are the same) or asymmetrical (that aspects have a different element that balance each other out)Pattern – the pattern is the design of the shape, forms, ornaments, and elements on the art piece. It organizes the forms and bases on the repetition of one element of design.Rhythm – rhythm also bases on repetition, but in motion and action. It is usually the movement of shapes, lines, and colors, to create cohesive work.Movement – this principle dictates how the observer will look over the piece. The movement of elements and lines on the piece can guide our eyes to look at the art in a certain way, and therefore create the wanted narrative.Unity – to combine everything equality into a beautiful and effective piece, there has to be unity and harmony amongst all elements, forms, and principles. Unity in the sense that everything is where it belongs and that no alteration would make the piece better.
