Gaining an etic understanding of a different culture requires some skills on the part of the individual doing the cultural analysis (Miner, 1956). It requires an understanding of the emic perspective of the culture in question. However, the most important thing to take into consideration is the fact that the individual must be able to detach themselves emotionally from the culture. Such a detachment is required to achieve an objective and testable hypothesis regarding the society in question ect.
