Actualmente se ha innovado sobre algunas tecnologías para su retiro como microorganismos que rompen sus cadenas o algunos materiales absorbentes que pueden atrapar el petróleo y retirarlo de un medio, sin embargo ¿realmente son suficientes éstos sistemas para detener una contaminación progresiva por causa de un derrame?, es evidente que no, puesto que la recuperación necesaria sobre el ecosistema posterior al retiro del petróleo toma mucho tiempo.
