Based on the context we can infer that a scribe is someone who writes. This excerpt makes reference to the ancient Egypt scribes, who were the only people allowed in that time to read and write. The process described above gives us the idea of how they learnt it, it made them highly skilled and they were almost on the top of the social pyramid.
