Friedan incorporated a nature versus nurture debate and functionalist sociology in her book. She wrote about how women were not always satisfied being stay at home mothers and taking care of the household and how a lot of times they had other aspirations. Her book was part of the feminist movement. Friedan wanted to see more equality in the world and less chauvinistic behavior. She wanted to show that men and women were equal and defy the predefined roles of men and women in society. It was her goal to show people that there could be a different type of society where men and women had equal power and rights. After her book was published, many sociologists began exploring her ideas, studying gender roles and family patterns.

the combing of the hair was the most important ritual to young girls. this ritual was known as the coming of age ceremony, but only the most beautiful girls where chosen. in this ceremony, the girls chose their new name and where chosen as either brides, or princesses of rulers.
