Benzoic acid was mixed with methanol and heated under reflux. The reaction mix was extracted with dichloromethane and washed with sodium carbonate solution, then washed with saturated sodium chloride solution. After being dried over magnesium sulfate, the solvent was distilled off to yield the ester product, methyl benzoate.
