Marcellus is African American, and when he goes to take a graduate school entrance exam, he is asked to indicate his ethnicity before he begins. This leads Marcellus to begin thinking about assumptions people make regarding African Americans and intelligence, and he begins to fear that he will confirm these assumptions. This could result in a self-fulfilling prophecy whereby Marcellus does poorly on the test.
