The colonists had to give up a lot of British goods in order to succeed in their protesting. Would you ever stop buying and eating your favorite food or snack from the grocery store if your community asked you to?

Depends on the reasoning. There is a purpose or a goal with every protest and depending on that goal I will decide if I am willing to give up my favorite food for the cause. If the reasoning isn't what I expected or it doesn't go along with my personal views on the matter, I wouldn't give up my favorite food because the community asked me too.
