Parliamentary government can prevent dictatorship through a system of checks and balances. If the prime minister tries to grab too much power the members of parliament can give him or her a vote of no confidence and another member of their party takes over the position of prime minister or the country gets a new general election and the opposition party may win putting the lead member of their party into the office of prime minister.
