In a positive sense, social media creates awareness when there is an environmental or social disaster. Some platforms allow users to take surveys where they mark themselves safe or endangered as the case might be. The information provided by social media can help people to avoid going to areas where their lives might be in danger.

In a negative sense, social media might constitute a negative threat when people become so consumed in it that they become oblivious to events happening in their immediate environment. Thus situations that would have been normally avoided become causes of harm for the individuals because of too much engrossment with social media.
