Do The Right Thing - Film Review 1. What were the feelings of the people in the neighborhood for the Korean grocers? Discuss with specific comments from the movie.

2. Do the Right Thing was a pretty intense movie. Give some examples of comic relief that Spike Lee used to “lighten up” the movie.

3. In many films that we watch and stories that we read, we see characters “growing” throughout their experiences. Does anyone “grow” in this movie? Why or why not? How so?

4. Lee ends with two quotations, one from Martin Luther King Jr., advocating non-violence, and the other from Malcolm X, advocating violence “if necessary”. What do you feel that Spike Lee is trying to say by ending the film in this manner?

5. “Da Mayor” tells Mookie to “always do the right thing”. Even though “getting paid” was the most important thing to Mookie, he started the riot that destroys the place he works. Do you think Spike Lee felt that Mookie was doing the right thing?

6. Comment on the main female characters in the movie (Tina, Mother Sister, and Jade). What is their role in the movie?

7. Do you think that Sal should have had to hang some pictures of African American heroes in his pizzeria? Why or why not? Explain your viewpoint.

8. Do you think the movie has a heroic character in it? If yes, who is that character? Why do you feel they are heroic? If not, why not? What would be the point of not having a hero?
