A balance of talking and listening - You want to make sure you get your point across to your parent/child, but you also want to hear their perspective.

Knowing what to say - Make your intentions and goals for them clear, and don't be a parent that doesn't know what they're doing raising their child

Be reasonable - Parents often take their position as an excuse to be irrational, and this just makes the child end up the same way.
