Zebulon Pike is best known as an explorer of the American West. He investigated the southern part of the Louisiana Purchase, and Pikes Peak in Colorado is named after him.  

Pike was sent to Minnesota by General James Wilkinson (Governor of the Louisiana Territory) to scan for the wellspring of the Mississippi River in 1805. Pike drove a team of 20 men from St. Louis to upper Minnesota amid the fall and winter. They went on water crafts, and after that sleds (when the waterway frosted over). Despite the fact that the genuine source is Lake Itasca, Pike was persuaded that the close-by Lake Leech was the source.
