Part B: Slavery and Cotton
The following map represents the cotton production of the south You will notice that the majority of the dots on the map are in the Deep South, the land that was also known as the Cotton Kingdom. For each dot, there were 2,000 bales of cotton produced. Each bale of cotton could be sold for $20. Hence, each dot on the map was worth $40,000 per year when producing cotton, which of course, required slaves to plant, pick, and process the cotton. In the decade before the Civil War, 1850-1860, $40,000 was an exceptionally large amount of money. Hence, the profitability of cotton was an extreme motivator for the plantation owners of the Deep South. These plantation owners wanted to make the most of their money.
Question:
1. According to this map, why might the South be motivated to keep slaves, while the North does not understand the need to keep slaves?
