In the early 1980s in San Francisco, Michael Vanderbyl, Michael Manwaring, and Michael Cronin forged a postmodern design movement that positioned San Francisco as a creative center of design. Although the San Francisco designers share gestures, shapes, palettes, intuitive spatial arrangements, and assign symbolic roles to geometric elements, personal attitudes are nonetheless evident in their work. combines a casual postmodern vitality with a typographic clarity, which reflects his background in the international style. This influence is evident in the 1979 "California Public Radio" poster (Fig. 22-30/23-31) and the 1985 promotional mailer for the Simpson Paper Company (Fig. 22-31/23-32).
