Decide which of the first ten amendments applies to each case described. 1. Anthony Morgan has a long history of dealing drugs. In fact, he's spent much of his adult life in and out of prison. Anthony was watched by police for several weeks as they prepared to close in on him one more time. On September 23 the police approached him at his home and presented him with a search warrant allowing them to search his home for drugs.
2. Randy just picked all six winning numbers in the Lotto and as a result will receive $10,000,000. Randy never cared much for his job, and so bright and early Monday morning he went to his office and quit his job.
3. Three young thugs hid behind some bushes waiting for someone to come by to rob. After some time, a little old lady came by, and simply by being in the wrong place at the wrong time, became the target for the young hoodlums. The little old lady got a good description of her assailants and, before long, the police had captured them. Even though the officers and judge wanted to lock the boys up for a long, long time for attacking a defenseless old woman, the time they would serve in jail was limited by their crime and their lack of prior records.
4. The Factory Workers Union in Hamstead, Minnesota, has been on strike for the last four months over a salary and benefits dispute. The issue recently heated up after the owner of the factory hired replacement workers. There has been violence almost every day as the replacement workers crossed the picket lines to enter the factory. The National Guard has been called out to keep the peace. The National Guard commander told the mayor that since it was wintertime and his soldiers had no shelter, the town must open up their homes to let the soldiers stay with them. The mayor refused.
5. Arthur has been accused of breaking into a top secret military installation and tampering with records stored there. Authorities have a good case against Arthur, and they have an excellent chance of getting a conviction. Arthur claims that he wasn't there on the night of the crime because he was buying drugs with a friend. Since his friend doesn't want to admit to buying drugs with him, Arthur wants the court to force his friend to admit where they were and what they were doing during the time of the break-in.
6. Mary owns a cabin on forty acres of beautiful wooded timberland near a spectacular mountain lake. The land and the cabin have been in her family for three generations, and Mary looks forward to spending her summers there. The federal government has been quietly buying up the land in the area of Mary's cabin to create a new highway. They offered Mary a good price for her land, but Mary refused saying she would not sell her land "for any price." The government informs her that she has no choice, that she will receive the money, and the government will take possession of her land.
7. Julie got a good, high-paying job in the city. Being a "small town girl," Julie is a little scared of the big city. To get to work she has to go through a bad part of town where the crime rate is very high. Julie decided to protect herself, so she bought a small hand gun, took classes on gun safety and handling, and got a permit from the city to carry the gun in her purse.
8. Joe and his neighbor Greg own property within the boundary of a national forest. Joe just got the boundary between Greg's and his land resurveyed and discovered that a line of big oak trees bordering their properties was on his land. Joe knows oak is valuable and plans to have the trees cut down and sold to a lumber company for a couple of hundred dollars. Greg argues that Joe can't cut down the trees because his great-grandfather had planted them to serve as a border between the two properties. Greg sues Joe and wants a judge to decide the case. Joe insists that a jury should decide the case. Joe gets his way, and a jury will decide their case.
9. Betty Johnson and some of her friends are planning a rally in front of city hall to protest the new budget prepared by the president and Congress. Their main concern is that there is a large increase in defense spending to cover the cost of new weapons systems. Betty has a reputation of being somewhat of a radical, and trouble usually follows wherever she goes. Even though police will be present and most officials don't agree with her point of view, Mary has registered properly with the city government, and city officials will not stand in her way.
