You are expected to write a response to one of the readings you were assigned in class ( An effective response will show that you have thoroughly read and understood the reading. It should clearly express what you think about the reading and what your reaction(s) is to it. It demonstrates that you’ve not only read the text, but thought about it as well. The purpose is to give meaning to what you have read and you should provide details from the text to support your statements about the topic. After you have read and fully understand the text, consider the following questions to help you organize your thoughts/opinions on the reading:

Do you like the text?
What is the author’s purpose?
Do you agree or disagree with the author?
Can you relate to the text in some way?
Did you learn anything from the text?
Organizing your Response

1. Specify which text you are responding to.

2. State your overall opinion of the text.

3. Explain how the text made you feel and why.

*It’s important to include examples from the text. You don’t have to use direct quotes; it’s better if you paraphrase. If you do choose to use a quote, make sure it’s short and that you explain how it relates to the point you are making.
