Congress passed the Dawes Act in 1887. The law was an attempt to bring Native Americans into the mainstream of American life by breaking up traditional Native American organizations. Reservation land was no longer to be held communally but was parceled out in 160-acre lots to families and individuals. Those Native Americans who accepted land became full citizens of the United States. In addition, Congress provided funds to support schools in which Native American children were compelled to learn “the white man’s way of life.” If you were part of Congress how would you have handled the policies for Native American Indians?
