Thirty-seven minutes later at 9:40 AM American Airlines Flight 77, en route from Washington D. C. to Los Angeles, California, with 64 people onboard, crashed into the Pentagon.

By 9:49 AM the Federal Aviation Administration grounded all aircraft in the United States for the first time in history.

At 10:00 AM United Airlines, Flight 93 crashed 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, after one passenger had placed a call to an emergency operator in Pennsylvania that the plane was being hijacked. Forty-five people were onboard.

Nineteen terrorists were involved in the hijacking of the four commercial airplanes. They, along with thousands of innocent victims from more than 80 nations died. Approximately 3,000 lives were lost in the World Trade Center alone.

The attacks of the 110-story twin towers and the Pentagon were unexpected. In less than an hour everything changed. Later that day, the U. S. President, George W. Bush stated "A great people has been moved to defend a great nation. Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shattered steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve. America was targeted for attack because we're the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world. And no one will keep that light from shining."
