Industrialization brought more and more people to the cities. The population exceeded the cities carrying capacities, because the cities did not have enough resources to support the growing population. This led to the cities becoming dirty crowded. The machines required coal and the factories using the machines polluted the air and the water also became polluted, leading the populations in a downward spike.
