In this situation we can see Ms. Mulaney was trying to create a welcoming and accepting environment but she was unsuccessful in doing this in a appropriate, educational way. By essentially forcing the Latino students to wear a mariachi hat she was embarrassing them and enforcing stereotypes. There are many other more appropriate activity's that Ms. Mulaney could have implemented. She could make a Hispanic Culture Club that is voluntary for students to come and learn about Latin American countries, food, and culture. Maybe she could show a video about Latin America and invite students to have a class disucsuuions. Overall it is important to acknowledge the Hispanic community but do so in a way that does not call people out and enforce stereotypes.
