They would import food but not sell it. But they had enough goods to earn much profit - they sold mainly honey, silver, olive oil, wine, and pottery. The beautiful artistic pottery was found on the coasts of Africa thanks to this trade. Harbor of Athens, Pireus (still existing today), became therefore one of the main points for the trade-in Greece.

On the other hand, Sparta gained its power by military power and not economic advances. They did not rely on the trade even discouraging it. They wished to be self-sufficient and get the needed goods by conquering and armed invasions.
