We bought a giant portion of land on the New world, causing this to double the size of land we own now. secondly we get more materials to work with, possibly more land to being more farms or herds or meats. Thirdly the cost what decently high, it also meant more land to defend from others, this means it'll cost more as well since we have to defend it as well. I believe the purchase was bigger than exploration due to this increasing materials, and land, but the exploration caused Us to find more India tribes, and a bit about them and more about the land, but again this could've happened, not in the same way but still happened while we were expanding
