Government intervention can help to keep prices of services low and make them accessible to all citizens regardless of economic status. However, some government interventions might hinder the amount of profit that companies like banks for example can earn.

In the area of the financial industry, government intervention is helpful in establishing interest rates via the Federal Reserve in a manner that helps to balance the growth of the economy and to protect the rights of both the consumers and lenders.  It can be detrimental to the banking industry to have financial industry regulation for example because it puts limits on how much banks can earn on the money they lend and it makes them disclose all their lending terms to the consumer. Healthcare is another area of society where government intervention can be beneficial because a single-payer system or government provided healthcare helps those without economic means to access care.
