After Solomon died, his son Rehoboam became king. Many tribes opposed Rehoboam's leadership, and ten of the twelve tribes of Israel decided to break away from his kingdom around 928 BCE. The ten tribes that broke away kept the name of Israel and picked a new king. Only two tribes remained loyal to King Rehoboam. His kingdom became known as the Kingdom of Judah.
