1- Pollsters take into account important subgroups of the population, groups such as likely voters, women, young people, and rural voters. What do you think the graphic means when it says a sample must be “diverse” enough to represent the views of the entire population? 2- A “margin of error” is often reported with opinion polls, using such phrases as “the proportion of likely voters intending to vote for Biden is 54% with a margin of error of 3%.” This means that on average 19 times out of 20 (in other words, 95% of the time) the figure for the sample proportion will be within 3% of the true value of the population proportion. Notice that the graphic talks about a sample size of 1000 for national polls. It turns out that for a sample size of 1000 the margin of error is 3%. Usually, public opinion polls are remarkably accurate at predicting the winner of an election. Sometimes, however, as in the 2016 presidential election, they are wildly off. Why do you think that sometimes election results fall way beyond the margin of error of the public opinion polls? To receive full credit, you should relate your answer to your answer to part (1) above.
