As a city, Tenochtitlán flourished between A.D. 1325 and 1521. The core of the city was a natural island on Lake Texcoco, but it stands out architecturally and in terms of engineering because the Aztecs continued to expand the island artificially. They created systems of canals and causeways in order to support the population of hundreds of thousands of people who lived there at its height.  There is little that remains now of the former architecture except the floating gardens of Xochimilco. Modern Mexico City was built on top of Tenochtitlán.  Thanks to excavations conducted from 1978 to 1982, archaeologists were able to uncover ruins of the Templo Mayor and visitors can now explore the ruins.
