Although surveys and government statistic strongly suggest otherwise, Hector firmly believes that most people who receive welfare, food stamps, Medicaid, and other government aid are just simply lazy and unwilling to help themselves, and are personally responsible for their misfortunes. He believes “It’s their own fault” and that, if they were like him, they would succeed without help. But when Hector has experienced failure, he tells himself it was bad luck and circumstances. Drawing on what you know about biases and errors in social cognition, how would you explain Hector’s view of the world and himself? Why might his beliefs persist in the face of contrary evidence?
