How do citizens have power in a republic, or representative democracy?

The meaning of democracy translates to the "rule of the people". In a representitive democracy, people consent to leadership through their votes that they give to ceratin people who have the power to make decisons on behalf of them and their best interest. When a new person is elected, citizen's consent is renewed, or the social contract is renewed. This is an example of Consent of the Governed, meaning that the government is only legitimate if the people agree with it's existance. Generally, a democracy cannot exist with out the voice of the people. Their voice can be heard through excersizing your civil responsibilities like voting, speaking with state and local representitives, protesting, questioning authority etc.
