The Mexican government encouraged American farmers to settle in Texas in order to protect the territory from Native American attacks. 9. Tejanos were people who were offered land by the Mexican government and sold it to Americans that wished to settle in Mexico. 10. Stephan F. Dallas was an empresario who established a colony between the Brazos and Colorado Rivers. 11. Settlers from Texas’s old three hundred received a ten year exemption from paying taxes. 12. Several US Presidents offered to buy Texas from Mexico but were turned down. 13. Spain had abolished slavery since 1829 & insisted Texans free their slaves. 14. The Anglo population of Texas tripled between 1830 and 1834. 15. The president of Mexico in 1833 was Jose Herrera. 16. Stephen Austin was arrested and imprisoned in 1833 for inciting a rebellion and calling for democracy in Texas. 17. George Potosi marched to San Antonio in 1835 with 4,000 men to enforce laws he created. 18.Santa Anna and his men attacked Fort Sumter for approximately two weeks in 1836. 19. Marcus Garvey and Jim Bowie died while trying to defeat Santa Anna at the Alamo. 20. Santa Anna & his troops were defeated by Sam Houston and his men near the San Jacinto River. 21. The Treaty of Buena Vista was signed by Santa Anna & established Texas as an independent nation. 22. Sam Houston was elected the president of the Republic of Texas. 23. Texas came to be known as the bold star republic.
