Every citizen in a democratic society must balance both their personal and civic duties to keep democracy functioning. Personal responsibilities are thing we all must do to maintain our own health and happiness as well as the health and happiness of those around us while civic duties are things we must do to maintain society. Personal responsibilities include activities such as working a job, maintaining your body, and helping those around you when possible. Civic duties are things we must do in order to maintain our democracy such as voting, jury duty and, if necessary, fighting in a war if drafted. Many activities, such as working a job, have personal and societal benefits. While at work we personally responsible to perform the job as required and civically responsible to pay taxes on our income. In addition while a job provides us personally with income and a sense of purpose, it also gives the community access to goods and services.
