What are some root causes of roadside zoos

Roadside zoos refer to the American landscape. They are usually small animals that are caught and often badly affected by wild animals such as lions, tigers, monkeys and wolves.

Animals often live in small, dirty cages. They are not provided with adequate food and are denied medical care. They are less in the way of mental stimulation - often, not even the company of other animals, because many roadside zoos keep the animals alone in their cages. Sometimes roadside zoos encourage dangerous interactions between animals and visitors, such as bottle feeding for tiger cubs.

These facilities continue to operate largely because of the adherence to loose state and federal laws and the relaxation of those laws. At the Animal Legal Defense Fund, we use all legal tools available at our disposal to provide more and better protection for animals in roadside zoos.

We protect new legal protections for animals caught in roadside zoos: In 2018, the Animal Legal Defense Fund has been a major success for endangered animals caught in roadside zoos. Cricket Hollow Animal Park (formerly Cricket Hollow Zoo), a roadside zoo in Manchester, Iowa, unanimously passed a three-judge panel unanimously upholding the district court's 2016 ruling. Four tigers and three lemons are being prosecuted.

This ruling is important to the animals of Cricket Hollow and sets an important precedent that we will use to help many more.
