The government didn't want to join WWI (and they tried many different things to keep them out of WWI), but it was simply impossible to stay out of it. The 3 things that forced America to take action were:

1. The sinking of the boat Lusitania by a German U-Boat (it had 120 Americans on it)

2. A message that was intercepted by the British government stating that Germany was willing to give Mexico Texas, AZ, and New Mexico if it attacked the US (A.K.A. The Zimmerman note)

3. The sinking of several US ships heading to Britain.

No, the critics were not Anti-Americans.

Explanation: Critics are professional commentators who comment on a particular event or view point. They are not necessarily affiliated with any particular ideology. Thus, the WWI critics were able to asses different consequences of the war and they deducted that WWI did not fulfill its very purpose rather lead to inhuman slaughtering of masses, even those who were innocent and were not involved in the war by any means.
