Intrinsic motivation is a type of motivation that an individual has that comes internally, that is, the individual does a specific task or activity mainly because he or she enjoys it or wants to learn from it. In this scenario, a student studies or behaves properly because he or she is motivated to become better instead of doing it because he or she will receive a reward or a good appraisal from the teacher or parents.

According to research, intrinsic and extrinsic motivations may change after a person receives a reward. This indicates that received a concrete reward constantly to increase a behavior in students may lead to the disappearance of this intrinsic motivation which could lead to a dependence on the reward.

This would be a disadvantage because the student would no longer be intrinsically motivated to become a better student.

2. What are educational implications of the potential for concrete rewards to diminish intrinsic motivation for a given task?

The student could possibly behave well or study harder ONLY when he or she is offered a concrete reward. This could be a significant implication because students can display a lower level of achievement or effort if the rewards are eliminated at some point. Apart from not being the best learning strategy, it could affect them long-term as, in the "real world", people are not always rewarded constantly.

For instance, it could disrupt their willingness to become a volunteer for an important cause because the person would always want to receive a reward which, in this scenario, is almost always intrinsic.
