During the 19th century, we have physicians and surgeon-apothecaries. The Physicians were individuals who graduated from several medical programs and could be compared to the general practitioners we have in recent times.

The Surgeon-apothecaries are to acquire apprenticeships and be trained about the formulation of medicines (apothecary) and some little surgical techniques. This is very similar to a present day pharmacist (it goes with no saying that a trained surgical person can be referred to as a modern day surgeon).
